Pakistan saw growth, prosperity whenever PML-N ruled: Iqbal

PML-N, Ahsan Iqbal, Pakistan,

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader Ahsan Iqbal said that Pakistan saw growth and prosperity whenever his party was in power, ARY News reported.

As per details, Ahsan Iqbal lashed out at PTI chief Imran Khan, saying that an untrained person was brought into power and ruined the country’s economy.

The former federal minister claimed that PML-N was sidelined through an agenda in 2018 and foreign hands were also involved in the ouster of Nawaz Sharif.

It is pertinent to mention here that Nawaz, who was in self-imposed exile since 2019, left for London in the middle of his seven-year jail term on medical grounds. The elder Sharif returned to Pakistan on October 21.

On July 28, 2017, the apex court disqualified Nawaz Sharif from office on the ground that he did not disclose a salary from his son’s Dubai-based company – the money Sharif says he never received.

Sharif served as prime minister twice in the 1990s before he himself was ousted in a 1999 coup leading to a decade of exile. He won a third term as prime minister in a 2013 election.

The court verdict marked a major political victory for opposition leader Imran Khan, who in 2016 threatened mass street protests unless Sharif’s wealth was investigated.

Bhutto family ends Zardari-Bilawal rift rumours

Bhutto family, Zardari Bilawal rift, PPP

DUBAI: The Bhutto family on Saturday put to rest all rumours of rift between Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) top leadership and father-son duo, Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto, ARY News reported.

The rumours of rift were doing rounds after former President Asif Ali Zardari said that his son and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari was “not fully trained” in politics and would “take time” getting up to speed.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Bakhtawar Bhutto-Zardari, the daughter of Asif Ali Zardari, asked people to not pay heed to the headlines, stressing that the family stands united.

Bakhtawar also shared an image with her family — including Zardari, Bilawal, and Aunt Faryal Talpur.

“Don’t believe the headlines – we’re only & always about family first,” she captioned the image. The family members can be seen in a happy mood.

Although her sister Aseefa Bhutto wasn’t in the image, she was the one who had captured it.

Bakhtwar shared the photo around half an hour after Bilawal Bhutto had posted a similar image on his Instagram handle, with caption ‘Family’.

After the rift rumours started doing round, the PPP said that the reports of rifts between the top PPP leadership were “baseless” and that there were only differences on some issues.

PPP Central Secretary Information Faisal Karim Kundi said the party chairman Bilawal Bhutto’s visit to Dubai was pre-planned.

“Rumours regarding differences between Chairman PPP & President Asif Ali Zardari are baseless,” he added.

Zardari’s interview

During an interview, Asif Zardari was asked about Bilawal, who in recent days has repeatedly called on the nation to let older politicians “stay at home” and to give someone new a chance in the general elections.

“And then Bilawal is also not fully trained. [We] are training him,” he said.

“He’ll take time,” the PPP leader said. At the same time, Zardari said Bilawal was more talented, educated and better spoken than him but “experience is experience”.

Asif Zardari asserted that the government of former prime minister Imran Khan wanted “minus Zardari People Party” and send me out of the country.

Zardari contended that initiating a no-confidence motion against Imran Khan was the correct decision otherwise he would have stayed in power until 2028 through an RO election.

A case was lodged against a sub-inspector (SI) and three policemen at the SITE Super Highway police station for harassing legal immigrants in Karachi.

A video went viral on social media in which some cops can be seen harassing documented foreigners. Police said that the accused cops were arrested, whereas, the SI was absconding.

In another development today, crackdowns on illegal immigrants were continued in Hyderabad and more than 40 undocumented foreigners were sent to the holding points.

Hyderabad police said that more than 24 illegal foreigners were deported by Pakistan. Police added that the raids were conducted in the vicinity of the Hatri police station in two days.

Earlier in the month, Caretaker Interior Minister Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti rejected any ‘manhandling’ of illegal immigrants in Pakistan’s repatriation process.

“Prime Minister [Anwaarul Haq Kakar] has given very clear instructions that there should be no manhandling of illegal immigrants during repatriation process,” the interior minister said while speaking on Senate floor.

The apex committee of the National Action Plan (NAP) in a meeting on October 3, chaired by Caretaker PM Anwaarul Haq Kakar gave a deadline to all foreign nationals living illegally in the country until October 31 to leave voluntarily or face deportation.

Sarfraz Bugti also assured the House that any mismanagement on the borders will be checked and suggestions from the political leadership in this regard will be welcomed.  “No Afghan refugee having legal documents has been even touched,” he added.

He reiterated that action is only against illegal immigrants, who have no valid travel documents, and the state of Pakistan wants to end this illegality. He said anyone, who wants to come to Pakistan on valid documents will be welcomed.

Pakistan reiterates support for diplomatic efforts to end violence in Gaza

Pakistan, Gaza, Israel

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister (PM) Anwaarul Haq Kakar on Monday reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong support to diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the violence in Gaza and stopping the brutality unleashed by Israel on innocent Palestinians.

The prime minister made these remarks during his meeting with Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Pakistan Nawaf bin Saeed Ahmad Al Maliky, who called on him at the Prime Minister’s House, PM Office Media Wing said.

PM Kakar conveyed his deep appreciation for the Saudi leadership for hosting the OIC Extraordinary Summit earlier this month to discuss the situation in Gaza.

He lauded the role of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman in building historic consensus among the Arab and Islamic countries.

Suspects remanded to police custody

Faisal Vawda backs military trials of civilians

Faisal Vawda, military trials, military courts

ISLAMABAD: Former federal minister Faisal Vawda has backed the military trials of those accused of being involved in attacks on military installations under the Army Act, ARY News reported on Friday.

While talking to the ARY News programme ‘The Reporters’, Faisal Vawda was of the view that the military was eligible to hold trials of those who were involved in attacks on its installations in accordance with the law.

He added that nobody could be permitted to involve in espionage or attacks. “The banned outfits backed the Supreme Court’s (SC) verdict against the military courts.”

Vawda alleged that the judiciary was responsible for imposing ‘selected rulers’ on the nation. “Our judiciary had declared Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan Sadiq and Ameen and disqualified Nawaz Sharif. Sharif was later sent abroad on the basis of Rs50 stamp paper.”

The former minister made prediction for a new wave of inflation in the shape of high prices of US Dollar (USD) and petrol in the democratic government. “How those people can make our country prosper who were involved in its destruction? For how long we would bear the burden of retired politicians on our shoulders?”

On October 23, the Supreme Court (SC) announced its verdict by 4-1 in pleas against civilian trials in the military courts. The PTI chairman and others moved the top court challenging the military trial of civilians named in the May 9 riots triggered by the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan in the Al-Qadir Trust case.

Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Defence filed intra-court appeal challenging the Supreme Court’s October 23 judgement, declaring as unconstitutional the trial of May 9 rioters in military courts.

The latest petition comes a day after the caretaker Sindh government challenged the Supreme Court’s decision against trials of civilians in the military courts.

The plea moved by the Sindh government has stated that ‘SC did not review the law and circumstances.’

Non-filers to face electricity, gas disconnection: FBR

Non-filers, electricity gas disconnection, FBR

ISLAMABAD: The non-filers would face the disconnection of utility connections including electricity and gas, as well as the blocking of mobile SIMs if return is not filed in response to notices issued, ARY News quoted FBR statement.

As part of restructuring measures, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has established 145 District Tax Offices to bring 1.5 to 2 million new taxpayers into the tax net till June 2024.

Caretaker Prime Minister (PM) Anwaarul Haq Kakar had stressed the importance of revenue and increasing the existing number of tax filers during recent meetings.

The FBR board notified the establishment of district tax offices, a new initiative that will help broaden the tax base and ultimately raise the tax-to-GDP ratio to a desired level.

Related: No extension in submission of tax returns, warns FBR

The offices would be headed by District Tax Officers entrusted with the responsibility of enforcing Income Tax Returns from non-filers and stop-filers, according to a press release.

The establishment of these offices heralds a new chapter that would expand the tax net to fill a critical tax gap on the path to bring all potential taxpayers into the tax net, the statement said.

The new offices would be headed by dedicated Inland Revenue Officers in BS-17/18 which would obtain and utilize third-party data acquired from multiple departments and agencies that hold critical information regarding investment in assets and incurring of huge expenditures by potential taxpayers who till now have managed to escape and stayed away from the taxation system including registration and filing of tax returns.

Related: FBR tax collection in October reaches Rs707 bn

One of the tools to be utilized for this purpose would be invoking recently introduced section 114B in the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 which authorizes the department to disconnect utility connections including electricity and gas connections and blocking of mobile SIMS, if return is not filed in response to notices issued.

The federal government is committed to utilize all measures and provide assistance to FBR, it added.

A new documentation law is also being introduced to obligate various agencies and departments to provide data to the revenue board through automated common transmission system.

Collaboration and assistance from the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has also been sought.

Chairman NADRA has assured the Federal Board of Revenue for its assistance for widening of the tax base through Data Integration.

The initiative would not only strengthen FBR’s capacity to enforce tax laws but will also facilitate taxpayers in filing tax returns by establishing dedicated offices, the statement added.

LAHORE: Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Mohsin Naqvi on Wednesday announced that schools and offices across the province would remain closed on November 18 (Saturday) as the province steps up efforts to curb smog, ARY News reported.

Lahore, Pakistan’s second-largest city with a population of 11 million, continues to be either on top or among the top three most polluted cities due to large-scale smog.

The announcement came after CM Mohsin Naqvi chaired a meeting of provincial Cabinet Committee on smog.

“Schools and government offices will be closed in Lahore on Saturdays while markets will open after 3 pm on Saturdays,” he said, adding that the measures were taken to cope with the smog challenge.

“Air pollution is increasing due to smog,” CM Naqvi said, noting that 90% of the crop burning in winter takes place and 10% in Pakistan — which is a major contributor to smog.

To deal with this, the interim chief minister said farmers will be supported in purchasing modern machinery.

“A committee headed by the Chief Secretary has been set up to take measures for artificial rain. Artificial rain will also be provided in other areas having environmental pollution,” he said.

Moreover, he said, experts from Bahauddin Zakaria University of Multan and Punjab University are contacted for artificial rain while Chinese experts have been invited to Lahore for consultation.
