Crackdown against electricity pilfers likely to face setback

Crackdown, against electricity pilfers, likely to face setback

ISLAMABAD: Efforts to combat electricity theft across Pakistan will likely face significant obstacles following the expiration of a crucial presidential ordinance that made electricity theft a punishable offense, ARY News reported on Sunday.

Sources close to the development revealed that the ordinance, which had been extended twice for a total of 120 days, failed to secure approval from the parliament.

With the expiration of the ordinance, electricity companies are now unable to file cases against those involved in electricity theft, undermining ongoing efforts to address the issue.

Previously, the ordinance had classified electricity theft as a cognizable offense, allowing police to take direct action against offenders.

These cases were being adjudicated in utility courts.

The impact of this setback is substantial, as electricity theft is estimated to result in losses of approximately Rs 590 billion annually.

The expiration of the ordinance could significantly hinder efforts to curtail these losses, affecting the country’s energy sector and economy.

The traders announced a nationwide shutter-down strike on August 28, in protest against the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) Tajir Dost Scheme.

CAA issues new NOTAM amid increased flights from Afghanistan

Pakistan issues, new guidelines, flights, Afghanistan

The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) has issued a new Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) in response to the rise in commercial flights entering Pakistan from Afghanistan, ARY News reported on Saturday.

Due to deepened tensions in the Middle East, international airlines are increasingly opting to use Afghan airspace rather than Iranian routes, leading to a significant uptick in air traffic over Afghanistan.

According to the new directive, all international flights from Afghanistan must inform Pakistan Air Traffic Control at least 15 minutes before entering Pakistani airspace.

This measure is crucial as air traffic services in Kabul have been non-functional for years, requiring Pakistan to manage the coordination of these flights.

Additionally, the PCAA has extended the NOTAM until November 21, 2024. The Dushanbe Flight Area Control Center will now be responsible for providing air navigation services for flights departing from Pakistan and entering Afghan airspace.

The Afghan Ministry of Transport and Aviation has reported an increase in the number of flights over Afghanistan, with 260 flights now passing through Afghan airspace within 24 hours, compared to the previous 110-120 flights.

Pakistan observes martyrdom anniversary of pilot officer Rashid Minhas

Pakistan observes, martyrdom anniversary, pilot officer, Rashid Minhas

KARACHI: Today marks the 53rd death anniversary of national hero, Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas Shaheed, awarded with the highest military gallantry award of Pakistan – Nishan-i-Haider.

The Army, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), and Service Chiefs paid homage to Rashid Minhas, a national hero who exemplified unparalleled bravery and sacrifice.

In 1971, during the conflict with India, Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas displayed extraordinary courage in defending Pakistan’s airspace.

Despite being only 20 years old, he made the ultimate sacrifice to prevent a hijacking, earning him the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan’s highest military honor.

ISPR highlighted that Rashid Minhas’s sacrifice remains a shining example of the dedication and selflessness of Pakistan’s armed forces.

His actions continue to inspire future generations, reminding them of the values of courage, loyalty, and patriotism. The nation honors his memory, recognizing his contribution to the defense and sovereignty of Pakistan.

This brave son of Pakistan was born on 17 February 1951 in Karachi. He belonged to famous Minhas clan of Rajputs.

His childhood fascination with aircrafts and aviation led him to what he truly was destined for. Minhas embraced his true passion after school and earned a degree in military history and aviation history from the University of Karachi.

He was commissioned as a pilot in the Pakistan Air Force in 1971.

Minhas was taxiing toward the runway when a Bengali instructor pilot, Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman, signaled him to stop and then climbed into the instructor’s seat. The jet took off and turned toward India.

Minhas radioed PAF Base Masroor with the message that he was being hijacked. The air controller requested that he resend his message, and he confirmed the hijacking. Later investigation showed that Rahman intended to defect to India to join his compatriots in the Bangladesh Liberation War, along with the jet trainer.

However, Minhas did the only thing within his control and forced that plane to crash just 32 miles from the Indian border, deliberately sacrificing his life for the honour of Pakistan.

Minhas spent his early childhood in Lahore. Later, the family shifted to Rawalpindi

Awarded with Pakistan’s top military honor Nishan-E- Haider, Minhas became the youngest man in history and the only member of the Pakistan Air Force to be honored with this award for his valiant feat.

Titled a national hero the Pakistan Air Force base at Kamra was renamed PAF Base, Minhas, often called Minhas-Kamra.

Freelancers demand immediate restoration of internet services

internet issue Pakistan, freelancer

KARACHI: The Pakistan Freelancers Association (PAFLA), a representative body of freelancers countrywide, asked relevant authorities to address the prevailing internet issues and take immediate steps to restore services to full capacity, ARY News reported.

In a statement issued here, Pakistan Freelancers Association President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tufail Ahmed Khan said that freelancers have been grappling with slow internet speeds and frequent disruptions over the past three weeks.

“These challenges hindered our ability to meet project deadlines, onboard new clients, and secure future business, resulting in significant revenue losses,” he added.

The Pakistan Freelancers Association maintained that ensuring a stable and secure internet connection is crucial for freelancers to deliver their work seamlessly and continue contributing to the country’s foreign exchange reserves.

“Pakistan is the fourth-largest freelancing industry globally, with over 2.3 million full-time and part-time freelancers,” Tufail Ahmed Khan said.

“If these issues persist, online freelancing platforms may downgrade our standing, further damaging the industry.”

The Pakistan Freelancers Association maintained that in addition to full-time freelancers, thousands of students also rely on freelancing to fund their higher education.

“Many educated housewives also take on freelance projects to support their families in these inflationary times,” Tufail Ahmed Khan said.

The Pakistan Freelancers Association president said that according to the Economic Survey of Pakistan, the country’s freelancers generated US$350 million in FY 2023-24, marking a 40 percent year-on-year increase. “This underscores the industry’s rapid growth, potential, and importance to the national economy,” Tufail Ahmed Khan added.

READ: Slow internet sparks concerns among Pakistani freelancers

Earlier on Sunday,  federal Minister of State for Information Technology, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, revealed that the slow internet service in Pakistan is due to the excessive use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).

Addressing a news conference in Islamabad, she clarified that the internet was neither blocked nor intentionally slowed down, but the increased usage of VPNs has affected the internet speed.

Shaza Fatima Khawaja explained that when certain apps’ services were blocked, people started using VPNs, which bypassed local internet services and slow down the internet. She added that using VPNs also slows down mobile internet speeds.

However she assured that the government is working to resolve the issue and improve internet services in Pakistan.

Furthermore, Shaza Fatima said that a digitization Commission is being established for digitization of economy.

She said that IT exports have witnessed an increasing trend due to the measures taken by Special Investment Facilitation Council.

The Minister of State rejected reports regarding closing or slowing down of the internet by the government. She said the slowdown of internet occurred due to over burden on internet traffic.
