Recently, the power utility removed over 2,100 kilograms of illegal connections (kundas) from Shafiq Colony, Medina Colony, Mohammadi Colony, Chaudhry Rahmat Colony, Qabail Colony, Bhangoria Colony, and Federal B Industrial Area. The National Polio Testing Laboratory has also verified after determining that the new case is caused by the wild poliovirus type 1, medical experts say. The experts suggest that the emergence of this new case underscores the ongoing challenge Pakistan faces in eradicating polio which is one of the few countries left on the face of the earth that have failed to eradicate this disease.

Despite extensive vaccination campaigns and efforts to raise awareness by the government and international agencies working on health issues, the virus continues to affect children, particularly in regions with limited access to healthcare and vaccination services.

Health officials associated with the federal government as well as provincial governments are urging parents to ensure their children receive the polio vaccine, which is crucial in preventing the spread of this debilitating disease. The government and health organizations are working tirelessly to reach every child, especially in remote and underserved areas, to administer the vaccine and provide necessary healthcare services.

The NIH along with other health authorities is monitoring the situation and are committed to taking all necessary measures to control the spread of the virus. Public cooperation is essential in this fight against polio, and citizens are encouraged to follow health advisories and participate in vaccination drives.

As Pakistan continues its efforts to become polio-free, the detection of new cases serves as a reminder of the importance of sustained vigilance and comprehensive vaccination coverage across the country. Power generation hits 7-Year low

capacity charges, energy sector, Power generation

Pakistan’s power generation has hit a seven-year low, experiencing a 17.4% year-over-year decline, highlighting the challenges faced by the energy sector, as the country grapples with a subdued economy and consequently, a slump in energy demand.

In August 2024, power generation in Pakistan declined by 17.4% compared to August 2023, reaching 13,179 gigawatt-hours (GWh) or 17,714 megawatts (MW), according to AHL Research report. This is a significant drop compared to 15,959 GWh (21,450 MW) during the same period last year.

On a month-over-month (MoM) basis, power generation witnessed a dip of 11.4%. For the first two months of the fiscal year 2025 (2MFY25), power generation fell by 8.9% year-over-year (YoY) to 28,059 GWh (18,857 MW) compared to 30,798 GWh (20,697 MW) in the same period last year.

The actual power generation was 13.1% during the period under review, lower than the reference generation. This decline is expected to result in higher capacity charges for the second quarter of the fiscal year 2025 (2QFY25) quarterly tariff adjustment (QTA).

In the month under review, the fuel cost for power generation declined by 9.3% YoY to an average of PKR 7.49 per kilowatt-hour (KWh), compared with an average cost of PKR 8.27 per KWh during the same period last year. The fall in fuel cost is primarily attributed to the lower cost of generation from local coal (down 21.4% YoY) and residual fuel oil (RFO) (down 9.0%).

Moreover, the generation of power from hydel and nuclear sources as a proportion of the total generation mix increased to 40.7% and 16.6%, respectively, compared to 37.6% and 12.8% during the same period last year. On a MoM basis, fuel costs dipped by 11.4%.

The load factor of combined cycle power plants (CPHG) arrived at zero during August 2024 due to subdued demand from power purchasers. The load factor of Thar Energy Limited (TEL) and ThalNova Power Thar Private Limited (TNPL) settled at 69% and 65%, respectively, and the overall load factor of local coal-based plants came in at 66%.

Hydel-based generation dropped by 10.2% YoY to 5,362 GWh in August 2024, primarily due to lower generation from the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), down 4.2%, and the absence of dispatches from the Tarbela and Neelum Jhelum hydel plants.

The cost of power generation arrived at PKR 7.49 per KWh during August 2024. Including transmission losses and previous adjustments, the fuel cost increased to PKR 8.81 per KWh. This actual fuel cost is less than the reference fuel cost of PKR 9.39 per KWh forecasted at the start of FY25. As a result, there is a projected fall of PKR 0.58 per KWh in fuel charge adjustment, which will be refunded to customers in the October 2024 bill.

Iran arrests 12 people for collaborating with Israel, Revolutionary Guards say

Iran, arrests, 12 people, collaborating with Israel, Revolutionary Guards

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Sunday that 12 people had been arrested for being operatives collaborating with Israel and planning acts against Iran’s security.

“As the Zionist regime (Israel) and their Western backers, most notably the United States, have not succeeded in their sinister goals against the people of Gaza and Lebanon, they are now seeking to spread the crisis to Iran with a series of actions planned against our country’s security,” the statement said.

Tensions in the Middle East have shot up since thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies used by Lebanon’s Hezbollah members exploded in an attack widely blamed on Israel. Hezbollah and Israel have exchanged some of the heaviest cross-border fire in a conflict running in parallel to the almost year-long Gaza war.

The Revolutionary Guards added that members of the network of 12 operatives were arrested in six different Iranian provinces, but did not say when.

In late July, the political leader of Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in Tehran in an assassination blamed on Israel by Iranian authorities. Israel has made no claim of responsibility.

JI warns of protest if agreement on electricity prices not fulfilled

electricity price agreement, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI)

KANDHKOT: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said that the deadline for implementing the agreement to lower electricity prices is expiring on September 23 and his party plans to announce its next course of action on the very next day.

He stated while addressing a sit-in protest in Kandhkot on Saturday. Naeemur Rehman said that the JI has already launched a movement for the people’s rights under the “Haq Do Awam Ko” (Give the People Their Rights) slogan, pledging that the JI will compel the government to provide relief to the masses.

He cited the recent sit-in held in Rawalpindi, which resulted in an electricity price agreement with the government, and noted that the deadline for implementing this agreement expires on September 23. The JI plans to announce its next course of action on September 24.

He called on the government to reduce electricity prices under the agreement, impose taxes on feudal lords, and eliminate the luxury and extravagance enjoyed at the state’s expense. He appealed to the public to join the JI and actively participate in the struggle against the corrupt ruling elite.

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman criticised the PPP for its 16-year rule over Sindh, saying that it has failed to provide any relief to the masses.

“Criminals have taken control of the province, kidnappings for ransom have become commonplace, the security situation is dire, infrastructure is in ruins, corruption is rampant, and the government is protecting the mafia,” he stated while addressing a sit-in protest in Kandhkot on Saturday against the deteriorating security situation and the prevalence of lawlessness. A large number of people participated in the sit-in, demanding improved security and a better law-and-order situation.

The JI Ameer commended the participants for raising their voices against the criminal elements and overcoming their fear. He assured them that JI stands firmly with the people, urging them to support the party in this common cause. It is prime responsibility of the government to provide people protection, he said.

He further said that the PPP, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) came to power through massive electoral rigging. He emphasised that the ruling elite—consisting of corrupt imperialists, feudal lords, and waderas—have been plundering the country’s resources for decades. He stressed that unless the people unite and rise against this ruling elite, the nation will not progress.

Pakistan’s debt burden: Every citizen now owes Rs 295,000

debt per citizen in Pakistan, Pakistan debt, external debt، domestic debt

ISLAMABAD: Every Pakistani now owes PKR 295,000 to national and international institutions, a courtesy to successive governments’ habit of running the state business on debt.

The average debt per citizen in Pakistan has reached PKR 295,000, according to the Ministry of Finance. This significant increase in debt highlights the growing financial challenges facing the country.

The Ministry of Finance has reported a significant increase in Pakistan’s total debt, which has surged by PKR 8.36 trillion, bringing the total to PKR 71.24 trillion. This marks a substantial rise from the previous fiscal year 2022-23 when the total national debt stood at PKR 62.88 trillion. The current debt level is equivalent to 67.2% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The domestic Pakistan debt has seen an increase of PKR 8.350 trillion, reaching a total of PKR 47.160 trillion. On the other hand, Pakistan’s external debt now stands at PKR 33.062 trillion. Out of that, the net government external debt has reached PKR 21.75 trillion.

Read More: IMF ‘concerned’ over Pakistan’s power sector circular debt rise

The documents also reveal an increase of PKR 292 billion in the debt owed to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), bringing the total IMF debt to PKR 2.33 trillion.

Composition of domestic debt:

The largest portion of the domestic debt of Pakistan is attributed to federal government bonds, which amount to PKR 32.8 trillion. This includes Pakistan Investment Bonds (PIBs), which have exceeded PKR 28 trillion, and Sukuk bonds, which total PKR 4.77 trillion.

Additionally, prize bonds contribute PKR 345 billion to the domestic debt. The documents also indicate that foreign currency loans within the domestic debt amount to PKR 374 billion, and the Naya Pakistan Certificates account for PKR 84 billion.

The rising debt levels highlight the financial challenges faced by Pakistan. With every citizen now effectively owing PKR 295,000, the government faces the daunting task of managing and reducing this debt burden.

The increase in both domestic and external debt underscores the need for comprehensive economic reforms and prudent fiscal management to ensure long-term financial stability. The government’s strategy will need to focus on enhancing revenue generation, controlling expenditures, and fostering economic growth to mitigate the impact of this growing debt.

Islamabad High Court, nullifies, election commission, June 10 decision

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has issued a detailed ruling on petitions challenging the Election Commission’s decision to change the Election Tribunal in Islamabad, ARY News reported on Thursday.

AS per the details, Chief Justice Amir Farooq’s 44-page judgment annulled the Election Commission’s June 10 decision and accepted the petitions filed by PTI leaders.

The court ordered that the applications of Anjum Aqeel, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, and Raja Khurram be considered pending and directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to reassess the petition.

The ruling highlighted that the ECP had acted in haste without collecting an affidavit regarding the issue of bias.

Furthermore, the petitioners were not given an adequate opportunity to present their case, violating Article 10A of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to a fair trial.

The judgment emphasized that the parties were not properly heard, rendering the ECP’s decision legally unsound.

It clarified that an application for tribunal change should first be presented to the judge in question, who can then decide whether to recuse themselves from the case.

Additionally, the court stated that the rejection of an application alone does not establish prejudice.
