Three Karachiites lose life in road accidents daily

Karachi accidents, Deadly roads, Karachi Roads

KARACHI: The roads of Karachi, the largest city of Pakistan, have become increasingly dangerous, with three people losing their lives daily due to accidents involving heavy commercial vehicles, ARY News reported.

According to a video report compiled by ARY News, the deteriorating traffic system in Karachi is contributing to a surge in fatalities, with precious lives being lost every day. Despite this alarming situation, the traffic police seem more focused on issuing fines and making arrests than on effectively managing the traffic flow.

Karachi, has the highest rate of traffic fatalities, with the Edhi Foundation reporting that three people die daily in traffic accidents, the majority of whom are motorcyclists.

Meanwhile, the traffic police appear to be more focused on issuing fines and managing “deals” rather than addressing the congestion on the streets. The city’s road network stretches over 10,000 kilometers, accommodating 6 million motorcycles, more than 2 million cars, and numerous commercial vehicles. However, the growing traffic problems and encroachments reflect the administration’s negligence, leading to severe consequences for the public.

Seventy percent of Karachi’s roads lack basic infrastructure such as zebra crossings, overpasses, and footpaths, further contributing to the risk of accidents.

According to the Karachi Traffic Police, industrial areas with heavy traffic are the hotspots for accidents. Reports indicate that most accidents involve motorcyclists colliding with trucks or cars, often due to reckless driving. Citizens complain that driving licences are often issued without proper regulations or checks, adding to the chaos on the streets.

‘Sufficient fertiliser stocks available for Rabi season’

Fertiliser, Fertiliser Review Committee

ISLAMABAD: The Fertiliser Review Committee (FRC) on Friday expressed complete satisfaction with the country’s current Fertiliser reserves, ensuring adequate supplies of both DAP and urea for the upcoming Rabi season.

Federal Minister for Industries, Production, and National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain chaired a meeting of the FRC to assess the stock position of DAP and urea Fertilisers for the Rabi season 2024-25, a press statement issued here read.

The minister highlighted the increasing demand for DAP Fertiliser in the country, with a 44 percent surge in DAP offtake. The rise in demand is attributed to the Punjab government’s Kisan Card initiative.

The DAP offtake estimate for October 2024 was 215,000 tonnes, which has increased by 44 percent to 309,000 tonnes.

This increase is mainly due to the disbursement of Rs 75 billion by the government of Punjab as an interest-free loan through the Kisan Card (Rs 30,000 per acre for seeds, phosphorus, and nitrogen) for 500,000 farmers, each with up to 5 acres (Rs 150,000 per farmer). So far, farmers have drawn Rs 18 billion to procure fertiliser.

The trend of increased DAP off-take in October is expected to continue through November and December 2024.

PIA privatisation: Shahid Khaqan suggests govt to accept Rs10 billion bid

Shahid Khaqan, PIA privatisation

ISLAMABAD: Head of Awam Pakistan Party (AWP) and former Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said that the government’s expectation of receiving an Rs85 billion bid for PIA privatisation is unrealistic.

Speaking during ARY News programme ‘Sawal Yeh Hai’, Shahid Khaqan suggested that accepting a Rs10 billion offer would be more practical. He criticised the government’s high valuation for PIA privatisation, saying, “The market does not accept Rs85 billion bid for PIA. In my view, even Rs10 billion is a high price for PIA considering its current structure.”

Criticising the current government, Shahid Khaqan remarked, “This government lacks both mandate and performance. Trying to run the country through haphazard laws is a clear admission of failure.”

Commenting on the role of the current opposition, he said that, the current opposition’s role is ‘ineffective’.

“PTI’s main agenda seems to be getting its founder out of jail rather than focusing on the country’s problems. Every speech and statement revolves around launching movements to secure his (Imran Khan) release,” Khaqan stated in dismay.

Shahid Khaqan added that PTI is relying on external pressure, particularly from figures like Donald Trump, hoping it will lead to Imran Khan’s release.

“It is a fantasy to believe that external intervention will pressure Pakistan into releasing the PTI founder.”

Shahid Khaqan said that the government believes its stability is due to PTI’s failures, adding that real strength comes from having a clear mandate and good governance.

Read More: PIA stake sale attracts sole bid below govt’s expectations

Earlier in Oct, the final bidding process for the privatisation of PIA attracted just one bid of Rs10 billion ($36 million) for a 60 per cent (pc) stake in the national flag carrier.

The government had pre-qualified six groups in June, but only real-estate development company Blue World City participated in the bidding process, placing a bid that is below the government-set minimum price of Rs85 billion.

Pakistan is looking to offload a 51-100pc stake in debt-ridden PIA to raise funds and reform state-owned enterprises as envisaged under a $7 billion International Monetary Fund programme.

The Privatisation Commission said it had asked the bidder to match the minimum bid.

35-foot long currency garland for groom makes headlines

PKR Currency, Currency Note Garland, Wedding ceremony

BHAKKAR: In the Indian subcontinent, flower garlands are often used for celebrations like a child completing a religious milestone, someone returning from Hajj or Umrah, or becoming a Hafiz-e-Quran. However, special garlands made from currency notes are mostly made for grooms at weddings.

These currency note garlands, also called ‘Jugni,’ are a popular way to congratulate the groom. Although this tradition is less common in cities now, it is still popular in rural areas.

A report from ARY News program ‘Bakhabar Savera’ shared that a unique 35-foot-long garland caught everyone’s attention in Bhakkar, Punjab.

The vendor who made the garland said claimed that it is the largest currency garland ever made in Bhakkar, measuring 35 feet in length and 10 feet in width.

The garland was beautifully crafted using 200 currency notes of Rs75 and 1,700 currency notes of Rs50, arranged in a way to make it look very attractive.

Back in April of this year, netizens were in shock to see a unique wedding ceremony in Narowal, Punjab. Where the guests were showered with currency notes.

As per details, a local butcher Arshad in Narowal showered bundles of cash and distributed mobile phones, and watches to the guests at his son’s wedding.

The unique wedding ceremony was held in Sagarpur, an area near Narowal city.

The brothers and relatives of the groom also showered currency notes, mobile phones during the ceremony.

This was not the first time that such extravagant wedding ceremonies have been held in the country and in another similar act, an industrialist in Gujranwala showered dollars during the ‘barat’ [wedding procession] of his son.

A video of the entire episode had also gone viral, showing people standing atop vehicles and showering notes one by one towards the people participating in the event.

It emerged that as soon as the groom, son of industrialist Sanaullah, along with his other relatives reached the marriage hall, his father, friends, and relatives started showering dollars and Pakistani currency notes on the guests.
