ECP calls back officers from provinces to centre

ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) called back officers from provinces to the federation, ARY News reported.

As per details, in a letter to the Secretary Establishment Division, the  Election Commission directed to call the officers serving in the provinces for over three years back to the federal government.

The ECP directed the officials of Secretariat Group and OMG cadre officers to immediately report to the Federation however police and Pakistan Administrative Service officials are exempted.

Furthermore, the Election Commission of Pakistan requested to provide the list of officers within next three-four days.

Earlier, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) allowed the transfers and postings of 170 government officers in Balochistan.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) accepted the Balochistan government’s plea for transfers and postings of the officers.

The Balochistan government was allowed to transfer 34 additional deputy commissioners, 84 assistant commissioners, eight divisional commissioners and 36 deputy commissioners.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) banned the transfers, postings on federal level after the dissolution of National Assembly and federal cabinet.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) directed to the Secretary Establishment in a letter that National Assembly and federal cabinet are dissolved hence the transfers and posting should be stopped till the constitution of caretaker government.

The letter stated that after the formation of caretaker setup transfers and posting can be made. The authorities should abide the ECP decision and stop the transfers and postings.

Seven dead in Thatta van-truck collision

THATTA: In a horrific incident, at least seven people died in a collision between a van and truck near Kenjhar Lake in Thatta, ARY News reported. 

As per details, a van carrying fishermen collided with a truck near Kenjhar Lake, resulting in the death of seven people.

The rescue officials stated that four fishermen died on the spot, whereas one succumbed to injuries when he was being shifted to the hospital.

Furthermore, the van owner and one injured died when the ambulance carrying them got stuck in traffic due to protests against inflation and inflated electricity bills.

Earlier, at least five were killed and two others sustained injuries in van-truck collision near Ahmedwala on Lahore-Sargodha road.

As per details, a high-speed truck hit a van carrying family members which resulted in the death of five people including a woman and four men.

The Sargodha-bound van was going from Faisalabad when hit by the truck and the truck driver managed to escape the spot of accident.

In another incident, four people were killed and 10 others sustained injuries in a road accident in Toba Tek Singh.

The accident occurred at Kamalia Road in Toba Tek Singh where a van hit a tractor-trolley, killing four persons including two women on the spot and injuring 10 others.

Karachi woman throws newborn from multi-storey building

KARACHI: A woman on Saturday threw a newborn baby down from a multi-storey building in Karachi’s Liaquatabad area, resulting in the latter’s death, ARY News reported.

According to details, the police arrested a woman for throwing her newborn baby from sixth floor of a building in Karachi’s Liaquatabad area.

The police, in a statement, said that they were interrogating the arrested woman, whose “mental stability is questionable”.

They further said that neighbours have seen the woman, who according to police is also a “drug addict”, throwing her child down from the sixth floor.

“The woman will also be examined by a psychiatrist”, the police added in the statement.

It is pertinent to mention here that reports of women committing suicide owing to stress have emerged from parts of the country frequently.

In one such incident in 2021, a woman jumped off from a six-storey building along with a minor girl in Karachi after it emerged that she was locked in a room by her family over drug-addiction.

According to police, the incident occurred in Gulshan-e-Iqbal block 13-D of the city, where a woman in her early 30’s jumped off from the sixth floor of a building along with a two-year-old child.

Narrating the incident, the eye-witnesses said that the woman initially threw her mobile phone from the sixth floor, attracting attention from the passers-by.

She later threw the minor girl from the building who was caught by the bystanders. The people gathered at the building tried to stop her from jumping off the sixth storey, however, she slipped off the building while trying to come down from the balcony, eye-witnesses said.

CTD kills eight terrorists in Balochistan

QUETTA: The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) killed eight terrorists in separate operations in Balochistan during the past 24 hours, ARY News reported quoting CTD spokesperson.

According to the spokesperson, the CTD raided a house in Basima – a town and tehsil headquarter in Washuk district on tipoff.

The terrorists opened fire on law enforcers, triggering a gun battle that lasted for some time, he said.

As a result, five of these terrorists were eliminated while three others managed to escape the scene.

The CTD managed to seize a large quantity of weapons and ammunition as they searched the premises used a hideout and are working on confirming the identity of the dead terrorists.

In another operation in Quetta, the CTD spokesperson said, they safely recovered a child and killed three abductors, who were stated to be the members of outlawed organisation.

The CTD carried out operation after the terrorists had kidnapped the child for ransom and also seized arms and ammunition from their hideout.

JI Ameer says ‘shutter down strike to be observed on Saturday’

RAWALPINDI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Pakistan Ameer Sirajul Haq has said that shutter down strike will be observed across the country on Saturday (today), ARY News reported.

While addressing the youth convention in Rawalpindi, Sirajul Haq appealed to the nation to make the countrywide strike successful to register their protest against the inflation and inflated electricity bills.

He criticised the rulers for pushing the country into a severe crisis and making its economy and politics dependent on the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The JI Ameer criticised the caretaker premier for seeking prior permission from the IMF to provide a relief to the nation. He added that the caretaker premier is apparently protecting the interests of the IMF. Sirajul Haq said that the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) parties have made Pakistani nation a slave of the IMF.

Haq said that they won’t accept the slavery of the IMF.

Earlier, the JI Secretary Genral Ameerul Azeem said that a peaceful shutter down strike will be observed on September 2 (today). He said that JI will announce its next strategy if the government fails to take back the hike in the electricity tariff.

On August 27, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) had decided to hold a countrywide strike on September 2 against increase in electricity prices amid mounting public outcry.

In a statement, JI spokesperson Qaiser Shareef said that committees have been constituted for a countrywide strike on September 2 against increase in electricity prices.

Qaiser Shareef further said that peaceful protest against inflation will continue for the next five days.

On August 31, the business community of Lahore announced observing a shutter down strike on September 2 (Saturday) against the inflated electricity bills and rising inflation.

Mujahid Maqsood Butt – President of Traders Association – said that markets across Lahore will remain closed on Saturday (September 2) in protest against inflated electricity bills and rising inflation in the country.

Major among two martyred in Miran Shah IBO: ISPR

RAWALPINDI: Major Amir Aziz and Sepoy Muhammad Arif embraced martyrdom during a gun battle with terrorists in the Miran Shah area of North Waziristan district, ARY News quoted ISPR.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations, security forces conducted an intelligence-based operation (IBO) on the reported presence of terrorists in the Miran Shah area of North Waziristan district.

During the operation, a party of terrorists was spotted and intercepted by Major Amir Aziz who was leading the operation from the front.

As a result, one terrorist was killed while another was injured.

During the gun battle, two brave sons of the nation, Major Amir Aziz (age 29 years, resident of Sargodha District) and Sepoy Muhammad Arif (age 27 years, resident of Sahiwal District) having fought gallantly, embraced martyrdom.

Sanitization of the area is being carried out to eliminate the terrorists present in the area.

Security Forces of Pakistan are determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism and such sacrifices of our soldiers further strengthen our resolve.

Earlier in the day, a soldier was martyred during an exchange of fire with terrorists in the Tirah valley of the Khyber district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said ISPR.

The fire exchange between security forces and terrorists took place on the night of August 31/September 1, said Inter-Services Public Relations in a statement.

The martyred soldier was identified as Havildar Muntazir Shah, 36, a Swabi district resident.

It added, “The troops effectively engaged the terrorists’ location, resulting in the killing of one terrorist,”

The killed terrorist remained actively involved in numerous terrorist activities against security forces and killing of innocent civilians, said the military’s media wing.

Efforts underway to provide relief in power bills: Murtaza Solangi

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi on Friday said that efforts were underway to provide relief to the masses in electricity bills and its details would be announced in the shape of decisions, ARY News reported.  

Speaking to a private news channel, the caretaker minister said that the caretaker government would own and stand by its decisions.

The statement came a day after Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar said he would announce relief on inflated electricity price in next 48 hours.

He said this issue has become longstanding as a result of unfavorable contracts with IPPs during 90s, inefficient bills recovery process and bad transmission lines.

The Prime Minister categorically refuted the impression being circulated on social media regarding exploitation of masses through electricity bills and other taxes.

Reaffirming his resolve to work hard for the betterment of the country, he urged media to equip itself in relevant departments for informed opinion that can improve country’s economy.

The inflated power bills triggered country-wide protests from Karachi to Khyber and protests in some parts of the country are turning violent.

The protesting masses have been demanding that the government should end the provision of free electricity to the notables and provide them relief as the bills they have been receiving are more than their salaries.

Speaking during the programme today, Murtaza Solangi said that the caretaker government was duty-bound to respect the law and the judiciary, which functioned freely in the country.

“As a responsible government, it is our duty to respect the judiciary and the law. The matter of Pervez Elahi’s arrest falls within the jurisdiction of law enforcement agencies (LEAs) and the judiciary,” the minister said.

The LEAs obeyed the law, he said, adding the media and the judiciary worked independently in the country.

He said every citizen had freedom of speech and a right to criticise that could not be taken away, but at the same time “we also have the right to present the facts without any fear”.

“Our limited tenure and the Constitution and law allow us to take decisions in the best interest of the country,” he said, vowing that best decisions would be made keeping in view the national interests.

Solangi said his interview with the BBC was presented out of context. “I am in contact with them and in my view, it will be appropriate for them to clarify.”

The Election Commission of Pakistan had expedited the process of delimitation of constituencies, he said while responding to another query.

He said the government would provide all assistance to the ECP to ensure that the election would be held in accordance with the schedule.
