Fakhar Zaman reveals Pakistan’s plan against New Zealand

Fakhar Zaman insisted Pakistan would have been happy to chase down a mammoth 402-run target to beat New Zealand in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 before the rain in Bengaluru made life less complicated for them in Saturday’s battle for survival.

Fakhar Zaman cracked an aggressive 81-ball 126 not out to guide Pakistan to 200-1 which gave them a 21-run win on the DLS method after rain ended the match after 25.3 overs.

Pakistan had been given a revised target of 342 in 41 overs after the first rain break of 90 minutes, with their total at 160-1.

New Zealand had made 401-6 on the back of a third World Cup century by fast-rising Rachin Ravindra and 95 by Kane Williamson at Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The win kept Pakistan’s hopes of a semi-final place alive although they will still need to win their last game against England in Kolkata on November 11.

With eight points from as many matches, Pakistan will want Sri Lanka to beat New Zealand, who have a better run rate, also in Bengaluru on November 9.

The left-handed batter said Pakistan could have chased down 402.

“The best thing about our players and the team management is that we are always positive and have never lost hope of a semi-final place. We knew that rain was due to come so we were looking at the DLS par score and after 21 overs we were above that par score, so we knew all the calculations,” said Fakhar Zaman.

The 33-year-old left-handed batsman was dropped from the side after scoring just 12 in Pakistan’s first World Cup match against the Netherlands.

He then missed the next five matches with a recurrence of a knee injury, only returning with a brilliant 81 in the win over Bangladesh.

Fakhar Zaman said he had worked hard to overcome fitness and form problems.

“I didn’t do well in the Asia Cup so after that I went to my coach Aftab Khan in Peshawar and he worked on my weaknesses. I dedicate my innings to him,” said Fakhar Zaman.

Pakistan ‘something special’, says New Zealand’s Kane Williamson

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson hailed Pakistan and their swashbuckling opener Fakhar Zaman as “something special” for pulling off a 21-run win in a rain-hit ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match on Saturday.

New Zealand had piled up 401-6 on the back of a third World Cup century from their young star Rachin Ravindra and 95 from fit-again Williamson.

But Pakistan, needing to win the match to avoid World Cup elimination, hit back in a blistering display of power hitting.

Fakhar Zaman clubbed an 81-ball 126 not out spiced with 11 towering sixes and eight boundaries for an 11th one-day international century while captain Babar Azam made an undefeated 63-ball 66.

“We saw something special today from Pakistan,” said Kane Williamson whose team have now lost four games in a row after starting the tournament with four wins. “When [Fakhar] Zaman’s going, not many grounds are big enough and certainly this wasn’t. He just hit it to all parts. So credit to the way Pakistan came out and achieved what they did today.”

Before Saturday, only two teams had ever scored 400 in an ODI and lost.

Australia scored 434-4 against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2006 before the Proteas made 438-9 to win by one wicket.

In 2009 at Rajkot, Sri Lanka made 411-8, just failing to catch India’s 414-7.

“The first half was, I thought, a great effort as we put up a competitive total. The guys in the second half tried hard but it was tough, the weather perhaps didn’t help, but we can’t take anything away from what Pakistan had to try and achieve and they came out and played beautifully,” added Kane Williamson.

New Zealand, equal on eight points with Pakistan from as many games, are still in a strong position to qualify for the semi-finals as they have a better net run-rate.

They meet Sri Lanka in their last group match, also in Bengaluru on November 9. Pakistan conclude against England in Kolkata next Saturday.

“I think the approach will be very similar. We can’t rely on other teams as you get down to some small, small margins of whether it’s run rate or your last match. Anything can happen really, but our focus is very much still on the cricket that we want to keep playing and adjusting to what’s in front of us. And we’ve done that in really positive ways,” said the New Zealand captain.

Kane Williamson said he was happy to be back from a thumb injury sustained in the game against Bangladesh after also recovering from a knee injury ahead of the World Cup.

“It’s just nice to be back out there, to be honest. Like playing the previous match and getting through that, with the focus being on my knee a little bit. Then to just break your thumb, which was a bit of a bummer. But, so just nice to be back out there with the team and playing,” he added.

Two terrorists including TTP suicide bomber killed in KP IBOs: ISPR

RAWALPINDI: Two terrorists including a banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) suicide bomber were killed in separate intelligence-based operations (IBOs) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), ARY News quoted ISPR on Friday.

Three terrorism-related incidents occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) today, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

An intelligence-based operation was conducted in the Rori area of KP’s Dera Ismail Khan district and one terrorist was killed and two terrorists were injured.

The killed terrorist has been identified as Usama, TTP’s suicide bomber, who was planning to carry out a high-profile incident in the area.

The second IBO was conducted in KP’s Lakki Marwat district in which a terrorist was killed by the security forces and various terrorist hideouts were busted.

However, during the intense exchange of fire, two soldiers embraced martyrdom. The martyred soldiers include Naik Zafar Iqbal (age: 37 years, resident of: District Gujranwala) & Sepoy Haji Jan (age: 30 years, resident of District Ghizar, Gilgit Baltistan).

In another incident, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded in the Kulachi area of KP’s Dera Ismail Khan district. Havildar Shahid Iqbal (age: 39 years, resident of: District Mirpur Khas) embraced martyrdom in the IED blast.

The ISPR said that sanitization operations are being carried out to eliminate any terrorists present in the area as the security forces of Pakistan are determined to wipe out the menace of terrorism and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve.

Karachi: Man kills uncle for sending obscene messages to mother

KARACHI: A young man gunned down his uncle in Karachi for allegedly sending obscene messages to her mother, ARY News reported on Friday.

Police arrested a youth namely Rehmat Shah for murdering his uncle for allegedly sending obscene messages to his mother.

The incident took place in Karachi’s Gulzar-e-Hijri Society. The cops also recovered the weapon used for murdering Noor Shah.

In his statement to the police, the accused Rehmat Shah said that his uncle reached outside his office and hurled abuses. He added that they exchanged harsh words after he accused him of sending vulgar messages to his mother.

Rehmat Shah claimed that Noor used a hammer to hit him and tried to snatch his pistol which was fired during a scuffle.

On Wednesday, a man who brutally killed his minor son in Karachi’s Saudabad was arrested by police.

The horrific incident was reported in October, in which the father after killing his minor son threw his body in Cattle Colony.

According to the investigation police, a man named Aamir brutally killed his minor son, Amaan, on October 17 and threw his body in Bhens Colony. To hide his crime, the man filed a missing complaint with Saudabad police on October 23.

The police swung into action on the complaint and found the man behind the killing of his son. Aamir has also confessed to his crime in the initial investigation, the police said.

277,462 Afghans residing in Punjab: documents

LAHORE: The government documents showed that 277,462 Afghans are residing in Punjab of which 189,167 are possessing the proof of registration cards, ARY News reported on Thursday.

The records showed that 88,295 are holding Afghan Citizen Card and the highest number of Afghan nationals are residing in Rawalpindi.

59,163 Afghans are residing in Attock, 33,502 in Chakwal, 28,803 in Mianwali and 25,776 in Lahore.

The Inspector General (IG) Punjab said that the police department finalised the repatriation plan for illegally residing foreigners and the deportation process in phases on November 3.

Earlier in the day, Afghan Charge d’ Affairs called on Caretaker Interior Minister Sarfaraz Bugti.

Afghan diplomat Sardar Ahmad Shakeeb discussed issues related to repatriation of Afghan nationals from Pakistan to Afghanistan and other matters of mutual interest.

Interior Minister said that the immigrants illegally staying in Pakistan returning to their countries. “We have issued instructions for respectable treatment with the people returning back to home,” Bugti said.

“No legal action being taken against those holding Afghan citizen card,” Pakistan’s interior minister said. “The government will not tolerate discourteous or impolite treatment to the immigrants at any cost,” he stressed.

He said a control centre and helpline have been established in the Ministry of Interior. Bugti invited Afghan embassy to appoint its representative for liaison over complaints, if any reported.

Minister informed the Afghan envoy that the women and children will be exempted from biometric formality at crossing points to facilitate them.

Afghanistan’s Taliban government on Wednesday urged Pakistan to give undocumented Afghans in the country more time to leave as pressure mounts at border posts swarmed by thousands of returnees fleeing the threat of deportation.

The Pakistani government has given 1.7 million Afghans living illegally in the country until November 1 to leave voluntarily or be forcibly removed.

Polio virus detected in Karachi’s environmental sample

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Health on Thursday confirmed that the polio virus has been found in the environmental sample in Karachi district of Sindh, ARY News reported.

According to the spokesperson of the Ministry of Health, this virus is genetically related to the polio virus cluster in Afghanistan.

Caretaker Minister for Health Dr. Nadeem Jan said that steps are being taken on an emergency basis to eradicate polio.

He appealed to parents to give polio drops to their children in the polio campaign. Dr. Nadeem Jan asked parents to save their children from permanent disability.

On October 30, a five-day special anti-polio vaccination campaign has commenced from Monday (today) in Pakistan after wild poliovirus Type-1 was found in sewage lines, raising alarm for the authorities.

The authorities have launched a five-day special anti-polio vaccination campaign in 31 district of all four provinces, where environmental sample testing of sewage samples returned positive for the wild poliovirus Type-1.

Sources told ARY News that the campaign – named Outbreak Response – will be conducted in three phases in six outbreak zones of the four provinces.

Throughout the campaign, over 10 million children under the age of five will receive the vaccine, along with the supplementary dose of vitamin A.

ECP’s special benches hear complaints against delimitations

ISLAMABAD: The special benches constituted by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) started hearing complaints against the delimitations, ARY News reported on Wednesday.

The ECP’s Bench I headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja heard objections to the new delimitations, whereas, Bench II headed by ECP member Nisar Durrani also conducted hearings today.

The petitioners along with the counsels gave arguments over flaws in delimitation of different constituencies.

The ECP special benches have primarily heard objections to constituencies in Islamabad, Jacobabad, Kashmore, Kohat, Khyber, Kurram, Attock, Nankana Sahib, Jhelum, Korangi, Sialkot, Rajanpur, Shikarpur, and Khuzdar.

The commission issued notices to the petitioners for hearings scheduled for November 2 and 3.

The commission had received a total of 1,324 objectionsto the new delimitations, including 672 from Punjab, 228 from Sindh, 293 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), 124 from Balochistan and seven from Islamabad.

After concluding the hearings, the ECP would publish the final list of delimitations on November 30.

On Monday, the election commission finalised the categories of polling stations across the country ahead of the general elections.

ARY News obtained the data of normal, sensitive and most sensitive polling stations compiled by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Sources told ARY News that 91,809 polling stations will be established in four provinces, including 15,821 in Punjab, 19,236 in Sindh, 5,015 in Balochistan and 15,737 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

Sindh: 8,030 polling stations have been declared sensitive and 4,430 most sensitive.

Punjab: 15,829 polling stations have been declared sensitive and 6,599 most sensitive.

Balochistan: 2,068 polling stations have been declared sensitive and 2,038 most sensitive.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP): 6,581 polling stations have been declared sensitive and 4,344 most sensitive.
